What is a dedicated IP?

When it comes to servers, we're talking big computing. Servers are machines specifically designed to run programs and services without being in constant need of shutting down or restarting (unlike a home PC or a professional gaming/editing rig, for instance).

Since servers host that many services at the same time, most providers will usually run into trouble if they attempt to provide every single service in that machine a dedicated internet address (IP) to run on - keep in mind there are only roughly just 4.3 billion IP addresses in the whole world, 600 million of which are reserved and cannot be used for public routing.

Considering that, it should be pretty intuitive to conclude that there must be an alternative that allows a provider to run multiple services on the same IP address - and you would be right, since ports do exist.

Ports allow providers like us and users like you to run up to roughly 65,535 services on a single IP by appending a number at the end of it, known as the port number. Example: 123.123.123.123:25565, where '123.123.123.123' is the IP address and '25565' is the port the service (in this case, probably Minecraft) is running on.

While ports don't affect your server's performance at all, they do make your service's IP address look a bit long, which is why many game server owners and admins tend to look for a server with a dedicated IP that allows their server to run on the default game's port, like 25565 for Minecraft or 27015 for CS2 (and pretty much any Source-based game), for example.

CodeNode offers an included dedicated IP on all it's Minecraft server hosting packages, which lets your server run on the default 25565 port for Minecraft. This means you and your players can add your server to their Minecraft server list by just indicating the server's IP, without specifying the port.
